Forest and pasture by-products are a rich source of nutrients, which can play an important role in the diet of local communities. The present study was conducted with the aim of investigating the diversity and traditional knowledge in the use of forest and pasture by-products of Bastam district, considering their social and economic importance and their medicinal uses among the rural communities of the region. In this research, relevant information was collected during interviews with local people by conducting semi-structured interviews with 44 interviewees and participatory observation based on extensive field surveys in 12 villages of the region. The results of the study showed that a total of 10 plant species belonging to 8 genera and 3 families were registered in the study area, which are used for edible and medicinal purposes. Meanwhile, the Rosaceae family with 8 species is the most widely used plant family with the largest number of species, including species such as Prunus divaricata Ledeb. and Berberis integerrima Bunge. They had economic value and were a source of income for local communities. The findings showed that protection through domestication of wild edible fruits can be a management strategy for the protection of these products, out of all the species identified, B. integerrima, P. divaricata and Crataegus pseudoheterophylla Pojark had the highest value index values. In general, forest and pasture by-products can play an important role as one of the wild plant resources in improving food security, maintaining health and sustainable livelihood of local communities, and the protection of these species can be effective in the sustainable management of food resources.
