The effects of logging on forest soil (Azad Shahr Kuhmian Forest)

Skid trails are the main place for forest operations and also the main sources of runoff and sediment production in Forest areas. This study was carried out in Kouhmian forest of Golestan Province. The aim of this study was to investigate and quantify of forest soil infiltration, compaction, resistance to penetration and soil moisture in three treatments including control (in the forest), wheel ruts and center of skid trail and three soil depths (0-10, 10-20 and 20-30cm). The results showed that the total infiltration rate, and also infiltration at different time intervals (2, 4, 6, 9, 15, 25, 50 and 65 min), were significantly higher in the control treatment. Compaction, resistance and soil moisture were also significantly different and the maximum values belonged to wheel ruts. Correlation results showed a negative linear relation (r = - 0.93) between infiltration- compaction and infiltration-resistance (r= - 0.94). These two indexes could well be indicative of permeability changes. Some of conservation strategies are: adding slash on skid trails to reduce compaction, limiting skidding operations to dry seasons, designing dips to reduce runoff on skid trails.
