Abstract: Heavy metals are environmental pollutants that can affect aquatic ecosystems and human health. Aquatic plants, due to their ability to absorb and accumulate metals, play a significant role in bioremediation and phytoremediation. This study aimed to investigate the concentrations of heavy metals—nickel (Ni), copper (Cu), cobalt (Co), lead (Pb), and cadmium (Cd)—in the rhizome, stem, and leaf tissues of Potamogetonsp. during the cold and warm seasons in the Bahmanshir River, and to compare metal accumulation across different plant tissues. Samples were collected from five river stations, and metal concentrations in plant tissues were determined using atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS). Statistical analysis was performed using ANOVA to compare differences between stations and seasons. Results showed that the average metal concentrations in the cold season followed the order rhizome > stem > leaf, while in the warm season the order was rhizome > leaf > stem. The mean concentration of nickel in the rhizome, stem, and leaf at Station 2 (Ahmadabad) during the cold season was 12.5 ± 0.01, 4.57 ± 0.007, and 3.48 ± 0.008 µg/g, respectively, and during the warm season, it was 46.12 ± 0.01, 8.87 ± 0.014, and 10.58 ± 0.015 µg/g. The highest copper concentration was observed at Station 2 during the warm season (24.52 ± 0.052, 11.16 ± 0.023, and 120.04 ± 0.04 µg/g in rhizome, stem, and leaf, respectively). Cadmium had the lowest concentrations across all stations (2.3–0.003 µg/g). Significant differences were observed in metal concentrations among plant tissues and between seasons (p < 0.05). Potamogeton sp. exhibits considerable capacity for heavy metal accumulation and can serve as an environmental bioindicator and a phytoremediator in polluted rivers.
