Rangelands have become unstable and degraded in many parts of the world due to improper exploitation. Therefore, providing effective strategies and approaches for the management and sustainability of rangelands seems essential. Using SWOT analysis, this study examines strategies for sustainable development of rangelands in Gonbad Kavous, Aqqala, and Gomishan countries in Golestan Province. According to the practical objectives of the study, survey and documentary methods were used to collect the data. The statistical population of the present study included various actors, including experts, managers, rangers, and faculty members from the Gorgan University of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources and Gonbad Kavous University. After designing the questionnaire, with questions in the form of a Likert scale, the researchers used the SWOT model to analyze the data in order to determine the most important strengths, weaknesses, threats, and opportunities, as well as strategies for sustainable development of rangelands and the strategic position of the winter rangelands of Golestan province. According to the findings, "less land use change compared to summer rangeland" with a weight coefficient of 0.069 is the most important strength from the perspective of rangers, experts, and faculty members, followed by better livestock distribution due to the uniform topography and large area of winter rangeland. The most important weakness of the rangelands is "the common exploitation of rural rangeland," with a weight coefficient of 0.052, followed by the low morale of the operators in carrying out development projects, and the existence of numerous roads. According to the findings, "allocating government funds to implement regional plans and projects and develop rangeland" is the most important opportunity for the sustainable development of the aforementioned rangeland. The most important threat in this regard is "the dust in the winter rangeland of northern Golestan province". The total final scores of internal and external factors indicate that the rangeland under study are within the scope of the organization's opportunity and strength axes. Thus, the sustainable development strategy for them was determined as an offensive strategy (SO) based on SWOT analysis. According to the findings of this research, the approval of the Inchebron Free Zone, allocating government funds to implement rangeland development plans and projects in the region, paying attention to the ecotourism value of rangeland, developing quantitative and qualitative integrated rangeland management plans, and optimizing and establishing pharmaceutical industries to develop sustainable exploitation of rangeland medicinal plants were introduced as suggested strategies for better management of the rural pastures of the study area.
